Michael Leese is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). He serves as Director of the UNH-in-Greece Summer Study Abroad Program since 2022. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Greek and Roman History from the University of Michigan, and M.A. degrees in Classics and Latin Education from the University of Connecticut and University of British Columbia. His research focuses on ancient Greek economic history, the evolution of capitalism, and family law institutions such as marriage and dowry systems. He has published a monograph, Making Money in Ancient Athens (2021), and co-edited volumes on classical antiquity’s legal and economic frameworks. His work has been supported by prestigious fellowships including the Loeb Classical Library Foundation and NEH grants.
Leese teaches courses on Roman civilization, Greek history, and study abroad programs in Greece. His current projects investigate ancient Greek institutions’ impact on economic development and the intersection of family law with economic systems. He actively contributes to interdisciplinary research through affiliations with UNH’s Center for the Humanities.
