Prof. Hans van Wees is the Grote Professor of Ancient History at University College London (UCL), holding this position since 2011. He joined UCL History in 1995, progressing from Lecturer to Reader and ultimately Professor. His research focuses on archaic Greek history (c. 750-450 BC), with extensions into classical periods, emphasizing societal, economic, and military developments. He supervises numerous PhD students and teaches courses on ancient Greek warfare, economic history, and methodologies.

Research Interests: Prof. van Wees explores archaic and classical Greek history through lenses of warfare, economy, and societal structures. His work challenges traditional narratives, such as Greek warfare myths, and examines fiscal systems in archaic Athens. He collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, including co-editing volumes on antiquity’s aristocracy and archaic Greece.
Publications: His major works include Ships and Silver, Taxes and Tribute (2013), Greek Warfare: Myths and realities (2004), and co-edited volumes like A Companion to Archaic Greece (2009). These publications underscore his contributions to understanding ancient fiscal policies, military tactics, and social hierarchies.
