Dr. Michael Krezmien is a Professor of Special Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s College of Education, serving as Director of the Center for Youth Engagement and Program Coordinator for Special Education. He holds a B.A. from the University of Chicago (1995), an M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin (2001), and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland (2007). His research focuses on special education equity, school discipline reform, juvenile justice system impacts, and inclusion for students with disabilities, particularly in marginalized communities like Holyoke and Springfield, MA.
Dr. Krezmien has secured over $4.5 million in grants from agencies like the National Science Foundation and OSEP. He founded the International Symposium on Inclusion, fostering global collaboration among researchers to improve outcomes for students with disabilities across school, home, and community settings. His work emphasizes addressing racial and disability-based disparities in discipline, autism identification, and STEM access for incarcerated youth.
Key contributions include developing progressive discipline frameworks, analyzing suspension disparities through multilevel studies, and designing STEM programs for juvenile justice-involved learners. He has published 25+ articles and presented at 75+ conferences, focusing on topics like trauma-informed care, technology integration in corrections education, and educational leadership in multi-tiered support systems.
