Michael K. Kuehlwein is the George E. and Nancy O. Moss Professor of Economics at Pomona College, affiliated with The Claremont Colleges. He has been at Pomona since 1987 and is on leave during Fall 2025. His research spans economic history, public finance, and development economics.
Education:
- Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology
- Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College
His work examines how transportation and communication technologies (railroads, telegraphs, post offices) shaped economic development in 19th-century British India. He also investigates consumer spending theories, tax overwithholding behavior, and labor market impacts like minimum wage effects on LA's garment industry.
