Menefee-Libey's research spans U.S. politics, education policy, and democratic institutions. He has pioneered studies on elementary and secondary education reform, focusing on institutional change in urban settings like Los Angeles and Chicago. His work examines the interplay between public and private education sectors, charter school dynamics, and the politics of reform. Recent scholarship addresses civic education gaps, corporate influence in politics, and threats to liberal democracy amid polarization and economic inequality. He has advised programs like the Pomona College Academy for Youth Success (PAYS) and contributed to KPCC (LAist) political commentary. His departmental service includes chairing the Politics Department and coordinating Public Policy Analysis.
As a civic participant, he co-founded the Napier Initiative governing council (2012-present), coached youth soccer in Claremont for two decades, and served as a faculty resident (1996-99). His current research compares public and private K-12 institutions, investigating charter-public school dynamics while addressing democratic challenges in polarized America.
