Michael Köhler is a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe's Department for General Studies and a Deputy Director-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) at the European Commission in Brussels since 2019. He has held senior roles in the European Commission since 1994, including Acting Director-General (April 2022–March 2023), and served as Ambassador and Co-lead of the Grand Bargain initiative. His academic career includes teaching at Sciences Po Paris, Sorbonne Nouvelle, and the University of Bonn.
- Education: Dr. phil. in Medieval and Modern History, Oriental Studies, Comparative Religion, Theology, and International Law from Bonn, Tübingen, and Hamburg Universities (PhD 1997).
- Key roles: Deputy Head of Unit in DG External Relations (2001–2004), Head of Cabinet for Commissioners Joe Borg (2004–2010) and Günther H. Oettinger (2010–2013), and Director for the Neighbourhood Policy in DG DEVCO and DG NEAR (2013–2019).
Research focuses on political, security, and cultural dynamics in the Muslim World, Arab League, and Maghreb regional integration. Over 30 authored books/articles on these topics, emphasizing EU external policy and humanitarian aid.
