Michael James Clarke is a Professor in Classics at the School of Languages, Literatures, & Cultures, University of Galway. His work bridges classical antiquity and medieval Irish scholarship, with a focus on the reception of Greco-Roman mythology, historiography, and poetics in medieval Celtic contexts.
- Educated with a B.A. and D.Phil., he specializes in historical philology and manuscript studies.
Research interests center on: (1) Togail Troí (Trojan War narrative) in Middle Irish tradition; (2) classical myth reworkings in medieval languages; (3) multilingual manuscript cultures. His current project involves editing the Third Recension of Togail Troí from original manuscripts.
Recent research outputs demonstrate expertise in classical reception, intertextuality, and comparative manuscript analysis across Europe and Asia. He supervises PhD students exploring topics like cross-dressing motifs and Fingal narratives.
