Dr. Michael J. MacKenzie is a Full Professor of Social Work, Psychiatry, and Pediatrics at McGill University's School of Social Work, holding the Canada Research Chair in Child Well-Being (Tier 1). His work focuses on child welfare policy, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), and the biological-sociocultural transactions influencing child development. He has conducted groundbreaking research in Jordan on therapeutic foster care and juvenile diversion programs, addressing systemic issues in child welfare systems globally.
Education: B.Sc. (Hons.) in Biology from University of Western Ontario; M.Sc. in Molecular Developmental Genetics; Joint Ph.D. in Social Work and Developmental Psychology from University of Michigan. His interdisciplinary training combines molecular genetics with social work research.
Key Research Contributions:
- Developed the Transactional Model of Foster Care Placement Instability
- Authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles on ACEs, corporal punishment effects, and global child welfare
- Lead investigator on UNICEF-funded projects in Jordan implementing therapeutic foster care
