Michael J. Lyons is a Professor at Boston University, affiliated with the clinical faculty since 1986. His research spans psychiatric epidemiology, behavioral genetics, and genetic influences on psychopathology, substance abuse, and aging. He serves as Chief of Twin Research at the Harvard Institute of Psychiatric Epidemiology and Genetics and is an Associate Editor of the journal Behavior Genetics.

His research focuses on genetic contributions to cognitive aging, mental health, and substance use disorders, supported by grants from NIA, NIMH, and NIAAA. He has led major studies such as the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging (VETSA) and twin studies on alcohol abuse. He teaches Advanced Psychopathology and Abnormal Psychology.
