Michael J. Lepore, PhD, is a Professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing with a secondary appointment in Medicine. He co-directs the Center for Health Equity and Outcomes Research. His education includes a PhD in Sociology and a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology from Georgia State University, an MA in Sociology from Georgia State, and a BA in Philosophy & Psychology from Assumption University.
Dr. Lepore's research spans long-term care systems, dementia care quality, health policy reform, and person-centered interventions. His work examines nursing home culture change, Medicaid policies, unlicensed care facilities, and international dementia care standards. He employs mixed methods to address gaps in regulatory frameworks and patient-centered outcomes.
He leads major grants as Principal Investigator, including projects funded by the National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer’s Association, and Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission (MACPAC). Key initiatives focus on cognitive stimulation therapy for dementia, person-centered care in low-resource settings, Medicaid coverage for residential care, and transitional care optimization.
As co-director of the Center for Health Equity and Outcomes Research, Dr. Lepore collaborates on interdisciplinary teams addressing systemic inequities in aging care. His international partnerships advance consensus on long-term care data elements and dementia care standards across the U.S., U.K., Sweden, Japan, and China.
