Katherine Abbott is the Executive Director of the Scripps Gerontology Center and a Professor of Gerontology in the Department of Sociology and Gerontology at Miami University. Her work focuses on person-centered care for older adults in long-term care settings. She co-founded PreferenceBasedLiving, an initiative translating research into practice to honor individual care preferences globally.
Dr. Abbott holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Case Western Reserve University, an MGS from Miami University, and a B.S. in Kinesiology from Indiana University. Her research emphasizes preference-based care models, social networks in aging populations, and nursing home policy improvements.
Her studies explore implementation of communication tools, staff training, and policy changes to enhance care quality. Key areas include PELI tool adoption, agile methodology in care delivery, and emotional health of healthcare workers. She collaborates on international dementia care frameworks and evaluates long-term service outcomes.
Dr. Abbott’s work bridges academia and practice through initiatives like Preference-Based Living, advocating for resident-centered approaches in diverse care settings. She leads the Scripps Center’s mission to advance interdisciplinary aging research and policy impact.
