Professor Michael J. Kowal serves as Adjunct Faculty in the National Security Department/Homeland Security within the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice & Forensic Sciences at the University of New Haven. He concurrently holds critical national security roles as a Protective Security Advisor for the Department of Homeland Security in Connecticut and as a credentialed Federal Agent for the Department of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, where he serves as reserve special agent in charge for a counterintelligence unit.
His educational credentials include:
- M.A. in Intelligence Studies from American Military University
- B.A. in Criminal Justice from American Military University
- Master’s Certificate in Infrastructure Protection from Texas A&M
- A.S. in Criminal Justice & Police Science from Community College of the Air Force

Professor Kowal's expertise spans homeland security operations, intelligence fusion center development, and counterterrorism strategy, informed by 26+ years of military service including three combat deployments. His Afghanistan deployment involved high-risk counter-threat operations in Kandahar Province targeting insurgents and insider threats through human intelligence networks. His professional focus centers on protecting critical infrastructure through vulnerability assessments and strategic risk mitigation.
