Michael J. Hiscox is the Clarence Dillon Professor of International Affairs in the Department of Government at Harvard University. He founded the Sustainability, Transparency, Accountability Research (STAR) Lab and serves as a faculty member of the Behavioral Insights Group at Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership. Additional affiliations include the Institute for Quantitative Social Science, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, and the Harvard University Center for the Environment.
His research applies behavioral economics to public policy design and private sector sustainability initiatives, focusing on social and environmental issues. He has conducted fieldwork in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the United States using experiments, formal theory, quantitative methods, and surveys. During 2015–2017, he served as founding Director of the Australian Government’s Behavioural Economics Team (BETA) while on leave from Harvard.
