Melani Cammett is the Clarence Dillon Professor of International Affairs at Harvard University's Department of Government and Director of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. She specializes in identity politics, conflict studies, Middle Eastern authoritarianism, and welfare systems. Her research bridges qualitative methodologies with policy-relevant analysis.
Her academic work focuses on how identity influences political behavior, particularly in divided societies like Lebanon and the Middle East. She has conducted extensive fieldwork examining welfare provision, sectarian dynamics, and the impact of international aid on local policies. Cammett co-edited The Oxford Handbook of Politics in Muslim Societies, a comprehensive analysis of governance, economic development, and social welfare in Muslim-majority states.
Her research spans topics including refugee policy, non-state welfare actors, and the political consequences of social services. Notable studies include experimental research on clientelism in Lebanon and analyses of how crises foster cross-ethnic solidarity. She has held visiting positions at institutions such as the American University of Beirut and the University of Oxford.
Cammett's work emphasizes the intersection of religion, politics, and development. She advises international organizations on humanitarian aid strategies and has testified before U.S. Congress committees on Middle Eastern policy issues. Her recent projects examine how authoritarian regimes sustain power through economic patronage systems.
