Michael J. Callahan

Dr. Michael J. Callahan is an Associate Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and holds multiple leadership positions at Boston Children's Hospital, including Body Imaging Section Chief, CT Medical Director, and Staff Radiologist in the Department of Radiology.

Dr. Callahan's educational background includes:

• Undergraduate degree from Hobart College (1991, Geneva, NY)
• MD from Upstate Medical University (1995, Syracuse, NY)
• Internship at Malden Hospital (1996, Malden, MA)
• Diagnostic radiology residency at Tufts University School of Medicine (2000, Boston, MA)
• Fellowship in pediatric radiology at Boston Children's Hospital (2002, Boston, MA)

Board certified in both Diagnostic Radiology and Pediatric Radiology, Dr. Callahan specializes in CT dose optimization, abdominal imaging, and musculoskeletal ultrasound for pediatric patients. He serves on the Image Gently® Steering Committee and previously served as Secretary of the Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR) from 2016-2019. His research focuses on radiation safety protocols and developing imaging techniques that minimize radiation exposure while maintaining diagnostic accuracy for children.

Dr. Callahan's recent publications demonstrate a strong commitment to advancing pediatric imaging safety, with work addressing radiation dose considerations for vulnerable populations, contrast media protocols, and innovative imaging techniques specifically tailored for children. His research bridges clinical practice and technological innovation to enhance patient safety while ensuring diagnostic precision.

As Medical Director of Computed Tomography and Physician Director for Radiation Safety, Dr. Callahan implements the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle across all imaging procedures involving ionizing radiation at Boston Children's Hospital. He has been instrumental in developing the 'Try Without Anesthesia' program, which offers patients the opportunity to undergo imaging without sedation when appropriate.
