Michael Hugelshofer is a Senior Physician and Clinical Associate Professor (Privatdozent) in the Department of Neurosurgery at University Hospital Zurich, affiliated with the University of Zurich. His dual role bridges clinical neurosurgery and translational research focused on hemorrhagic stroke and brain injury pathophysiology.
His research investigates the complex mechanisms of secondary brain injury after hemorrhagic stroke, with emphasis on cell-free hemoglobin toxicity in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Since 2016, he co-established an interdisciplinary network that identified hemoglobin delocalization from cerebrospinal fluid into cerebrovascular walls and brain interstitium as the critical step triggering neurotoxicity. His team demonstrated intracerebroventricular haptoglobin treatment effectively compartmentalizes and detoxifies hemoglobin in large animal models, providing foundational evidence for clinical translation.
Current work prioritizes bench-to-bedside development of diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies targeting hemoglobin toxicity, aiming to improve outcomes for hemorrhagic stroke patients through innovative neurosurgical interventions.
