Michael Hout is the Natalie Cohen Professor of Sociology and Demography at the University of California, Berkeley (emeritus). He retired from Berkeley in 2013 but remains active at New York University. His research focuses on demography, inequality, religion, and social change, using demographic methods to analyze trends. He has authored influential books like Century of Difference (2006) and Inequality by Design (1996). Hout holds prestigious awards, including membership in the National Academy of Sciences (2003) and American Philosophical Society (2006).
Education: B.A. in History and Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh (1972), M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Indiana University (1973, 1976). His career includes roles as Sociology Department Chair at Berkeley, Director of the Survey Research Center, and Berkeley Population Center Director.
Research emphasizes social mobility, religious demography, and educational inequality. Notable studies include analyses of U.S. religious decline, Irish immigration impacts, and Great Recession effects on unemployment.
