Michael Hout is a Professor of Sociology at New York University and Director of the Center for Advanced Social Science Research. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Indiana University (1976), and B.A. & M.A. degrees in Sociology and History from the University of Pittsburgh (1972/1973). His research focuses on Inequality, Social Change, Demography, and Quantitative Methods, with a particular emphasis on analyzing long-term trends using datasets like the General Social Survey (GSS). He has authored/co-authored influential works including Century of Difference: How America Changed in the Last One Hundred Years and contributed to policy-oriented initiatives such as the National Academies' Societal Experts Action Network (SEAN).
His work examines topics like political polarization, educational disparities, religious decline, and the impact of pandemics on vulnerable populations. Hout has served on editorial boards and advisory committees, including roles with the Russell Sage Foundation and the National Academies of Sciences. His research often bridges academic inquiry with public policy, addressing issues like college affordability, survey methodology innovations, and socioeconomic mobility across generations.
Recent contributions include analyzing historical social mobility in the Tang Dynasty, evaluating the unintended consequences of survey methodology shifts during the pandemic, and investigating how racial and gender demographics shape electoral outcomes.
