Michael Hanlon

Dr. Michael Hanlon serves as a Lecturer in Human Movement Sciences within the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at South East Technological University (SETU), formerly Waterford Institute of Technology. He holds a BSc in Sport and Exercise Sciences and a PhD in Biomechanics, both from the University of Limerick. Prior to his current position, he worked as a lecturer at the University of Ulster from 2008-2012.

His research interests focus on quantitative approaches to sports biomechanics, with particular emphasis on sports injury prevention and treatment, biofeedback applications in sport and rehabilitation, functional movement screening, ambulatory monitoring, and movement variability analysis. His work bridges theoretical biomechanics with practical sports and clinical applications.

Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on hip biomechanics (particularly femoroacetabular impingement), running mechanics, and boxing technique analysis. His research demonstrates consistent methodological rigor with applications spanning from elite athletic performance to clinical rehabilitation settings.

He has organized professional events including the BASES Biomechanics Interest Group meeting in 2012.

His laboratory work focuses on biomechanical assessment technologies and their application to sports performance and injury prevention, with ongoing collaborative projects involving clinical partners like the Hip and Groin Clinic at Whitfield Clinic.
