Michael H. Cottman serves as Assistant to the Dean and Lecturer of Political Reporting at Morgan State University's School of Global Journalism & Communication, where he facilitates the Dean's special projects with major media organizations including The Wall Street Journal, NBCUniversal, CBS News, CBS Sports, and Forbes.
His professional focus centers on Journalism, Political Reporting, African American Studies, History of Slavery, and Media Diversity, with extensive work documenting the Black experience in America through books, reporting, and editorial leadership.
Cottman's distinguished honors include:
- Pulitzer Prize (1992) shared with Newsday staff
- 2022 Outstanding Book Award from The National Association of Black Journalists for "Say Their Names: How Black Lives Came To Matter in America" and "Segregated Skies: David Harris’s Trailblazing Journey to Rise Above Racial Barriers"
His career spans reporting for The Washington Post, Newsday, and The Miami Herald; editorial leadership at NBC News Digital and NBCBLK; and Program Editor roles with NBCUniversal's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Team. He has also appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss his research on slavery and scuba diving expeditions related to his book "The Wreck of the Henrietta Marie".
