Michael Gutierrez

Dr. Michael Gutierrez serves as a Professor of Organic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry at La Sierra University, where he conducts an on-campus research laboratory mentored by undergraduate students. A La Sierra alumnus, he transitioned from pre-law to chemistry after being inspired by a passionate high school teacher, later teaching high school before returning for graduate studies. This winter quarter, he co-teaches the freshman Honors course The Scientific Process with marine biologist Dr. Lloyd Trueblood, bridging chemistry and biology through hands-on research.

His educational journey began with undergraduate studies at La Sierra University, followed by high school teaching and graduate work. Gutierrez emphasizes that research inherently involves trial and error, stating: "It isn't going to work every single time, but sometimes that can lead to even better discoveries." His pedagogy centers on developing scientific thinking skills applicable beyond STEM fields, focusing on experimental design, hypothesis testing, and learning from failure.

Through his Honors course collaboration, Gutierrez integrates organic chemistry with marine biology to create guided yet student-driven research experiences. He mentors undergraduates in his chemistry laboratory while championing the philosophy that "it is about the journey, not the end goal," reflecting his own career path from forensic science aspirations to chemistry education.
