Dr. Michael Gulayets is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at MacEwan University, Alberta, Canada. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Alberta (2007) and has been with MacEwan since 2006.
- Expertise in criminology, forensic psychiatry, and criminal insanity
- Faculty leader of the Sociological Field School (SOCI 395)
- Research focuses on individuals found Not Criminally Responsible on Account of Mental Disorder (NCRMD)
His research investigates legal/psychiatric decision-making in mental disorder defences and social control mechanisms for NCRMD individuals post-discharge. He also examines contextual factors in violent and sexual offending, bridging criminological theory with forensic practice.
Publications reveal interdisciplinary engagement with fields like risk management, recovery models, and threat assessment. Awards include the 2014 MacEwan University Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Gulayets supervises student research on criminal insanity, violent offending, and forensic psychiatric services.
