Michael Gottesman is Chief of the Laboratory of Cell Biology at the Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute (NCI), NIH (since 1990), and previously served as Deputy Director for Intramural Research at NIH (1993–2022). He holds an M.D. from Harvard Medical School and completed residencies and fellowships at Harvard and the NIH. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of multidrug resistance in cancer, particularly ABC transporter proteins like P-glycoprotein (ABCB1), and their roles in chemotherapy failure and physiological barriers such as the blood-brain barrier. He pioneered the cloning of ABCB1 and studies on ABC transporter families.
