Michael Goodwin is an Instrument Scientist at Australian Astronomical Optics, Macquarie University, specializing in astronomical instrumentation and adaptive optics systems. He holds a PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics from the Australian National University (2009) and a Bachelor of Engineering from The University of Western Australia (1998).
His research focuses on:
- Advanced spectrograph design and telescope instrumentation
- Adaptive optics systems for major observatories
- Opto-mechanical engineering and finite element analysis
- Redshift surveys and wide-field spectroscopic surveys
- Innovations in focal plane technology and fiber optics
Recent publications (2024) demonstrate his work on next-generation instrumentation for facilities like Gemini Observatory and ESO's Very Large Telescope, covering adaptive optics benches, spectrograph optimization, and novel telescope concepts.
He currently leads the 'Gemini North Adaptive Optics Bench Phase B' project (2023-2028), developing advanced adaptive optics technology for astronomical observation.
