Michael Gitlin serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Hunter College, City University of New York, where he has taught film courses since 1995. His instructional portfolio includes Screen Directing, Film Production, Sound Production for Film and Video, and Introduction to Film and Video Technique.
His academic background comprises:
- B.A. in Philosophy from Indiana University, Bloomington (1978)
- M.F.A. in Filmmaking from Bard College, Annandale, NY (1995)
Gitlin's creative research spans experimental filmmaking, video art, and narrative direction. His works have been exhibited internationally at prestigious venues including the London Film Festival, Melbourne Australian Film Festival, Anthology Film Archives, Pacific Film Archive, and PBS's Independent Focus. His feature Berenice (1996) premiered at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival and the 1997 Whitney Biennial, while Nine Guided Tours (2000) and Off and On (1998) screened at the New York Video Festival at Lincoln Center.
He has secured competitive funding through grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the City of Seattle Arts Commission to support his independent film projects. Gitlin maintains an active teaching presence across multiple institutions including Pratt Institute, New York University, Rutgers University, and the University of the Arts.
