Michael Gilsenan is a Senior Lecturer in Youth & Community Work and Foundation Year at Newman University's Faculty of Arts, Society and Professional Studies. He holds a MA in Community Education from De Montfort University and is pursuing a Doctorate of Education at Liverpool Hope University. His research focuses on 'Unplanned, Incidental and Spontaneous Learning,' emphasizing collaborative research approaches.
He teaches modules in informal education philosophy and critical pedagogy, including Foundation Year study programs. Administrative roles include Joint Programme Lead for the BA Hons Youth and Community Work and membership in the Learning, Teaching and Academic Quality Committee. He is also part of the Birmingham Youth Work Training Group and the leadership team for Citizens UK Birmingham.
Key research interests include critical pedagogy, community organizing, and educational assessment. His conference presentations highlight themes like intentional communities and horizontal learning environments.
