Michael Ghil is a leading geoscientist and climate dynamicist holding faculty appointments at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Imperial College London. Since 2005 he has also served as a Corresponding Member of the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences abroad.
His research integrates nonlinear dynamics with climate science, oceanography and even macroeconomics, focusing on how complex systems evolve over time.
Among his accolades are the Alfred Wegener Medal, Lewis Fry Richardson Medal, and Guggenheim Fellowship.
- Alfred Wegener Medal and Honorary Membership, European Geosciences Union
- Lorenz Lecture, American Geophysical Union
- Lewis Fry Richardson Medal, European Geosciences Union
- NSF Special Creativity Awards
- Guggenheim Fellowship
Recent publications (2019–2020) include comprehensive reviews on climate variability, the physics of climate change, and a centennial retrospective on nonlinearity in the geosciences, underscoring his sustained leadership at the intersection of mathematics, physics and earth-system science.
