Michael Galaty is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, serving as Director and Curator of the Museum of Anthropological Archaeology and the Archaeology Subfield Head. He holds affiliations with the Center for Russian, East European, & Eurasian Studies, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia, and the International Institute. His research focuses on the rise of complex societies, with a specialization in Mycenaean Greece and Bronze Age Albania. He directs field projects in Greece and Albania, emphasizing landscape archaeology and cultural heritage management.
Galaty earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin. His work integrates archaeological field methods with interdisciplinary approaches, including artifact analysis, GIS, and DNA studies. Notably, his book Light and Shadow: Isolation and Interaction in the Shala Valley of Northern Albania won the 2014 Society for American Archaeology (SAA) Book Award.
His research interests span Mediterranean prehistory, Mycenaean political economies, and the archaeology of Albania. He has contributed to projects such as the Projekti Arkeologjik i Shkodrës (PASH) in northern Albania and studies on Mycenaean trade networks. Galaty’s work bridges archaeological theory with applied research, addressing topics like state formation, cultural interaction, and historical memory.
