University of Newcastle Australia (UON)معرفی
Dr. Michael Fricker is a Research Fellow at the University of Newcastle's School of Medicine and Public Health, specializing in severe asthma and COPD pathogenesis. He leads the ALTEOS clinical cohort study and bridges cell biology with respiratory medicine, having previously identified phagoptosis (cell death via phagocytosis) at University of Cambridge.
- Academic Appointments:
- 2016–Present: NHMRC Post-doctoral Research Fellow
- 2012–2016: Post-doctoral Research Associate
- 2009–2012: Post-doctoral Researcher, University of Cambridge
- Research Focus:
- Cell Death Mechanisms (Apoptosis, Necroptosis, Phagoptosis)
- Airway Inflammation Subtypes in Asthma/COPD
- Single-Cell and 'Omic Analyses of Sputum/Blood
- Biomarker Discovery for Personalized Medicine
His recent work employs flow cytometry to identify rare cells like mast cells in sputum, overcoming limitations of conventional microscopy. This technology enables molecular subtyping of asthma and COPD, guiding targeted therapies such as mepolizumab and benralizumab.
Scientific Awards:
- 2018 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Collaboration Excellence
- 2018 PRC for Healthy Lungs Outstanding Scholar
- 2015 AstraZeneca Innovation Prize
Dr. Fricker has supervised five PhD students, two honours, and one master's student to completion, and currently oversees three PhD candidates. His collaborations span institutions in Australia, UK, and USA, working with leaders like Professor Peter Gibson and Professor Phil Hansbro.
