Michael Fleming

Michael Fleming is a Lecturer in the Department of Social Welfare at UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs. He currently serves as Executive Director of the David Bohnett Foundation, which focuses on social activism through grant-making. Since 2000, he has directed over $125 million in grants to aligned organizations.

Research Interests: Fleming specializes in public policy, social welfare systems, urban development strategies, and the intersection of philanthropy with governance. His work emphasizes institutional effectiveness, community engagement, and the role of organizations in societal change. Additional focus areas include LGBTQ+ studies and civic education through his academic committee roles.

Awards: In 2023, he was honored with UCLA’s Lavender Graduation Student’s Choice Outstanding Faculty Award, recognizing his teaching impact. His leadership in non-profit governance and policy advocacy has also earned widespread recognition.

Advising & Grants: Fleming combines academic advising with extensive grant-making experience. At UCLA, he contributes to the LGBTQ Studies Faculty Advisory Committee. His professional grants portfolio demonstrates expertise in directing resources to grassroots initiatives and public utilities.
