Michael Figueroa (he/him) is a Teaching Professor in Dance at Smith College, where he contributes to the academic and artistic community through performance, choreography, and education. He is also the director of Ruckus Dance, emphasizing rule-breaking, body memory, and improvised scenarios in his work.
His research and practice focus on contemporary dance forms, including audience participation, narrative-driven movement, and the intersection of personal anecdotes with physical expression. He has been commissioned by institutions such as SPACE Gallery (ME), Dance Now Boston, and Mobius Artists Group (MA), and has collaborated with artists like Jimena Bermejo, Alexander Davis, and Sarah Mae Gibbons.
Michael trained at The Alexander W. Dreyfoos Jr. School of the Arts and earned his BFA in Dance from The Boston Conservatory. His performance experience spans works by renowned choreographers like Mark Dendy and Margot Gelber & Dancers, culminating in recent projects such as ways of rendering a man blind at the 2024 Asheville Fringe Festival.
As an educator, he has taught at Gibney Studios, Boston Arts Academy, and Moving Target (Boston & Portland), with formative mentorship from Marissa Molinar through the Midday Movement Series since 2015. His training includes summer intensives at Joffrey Jazz and Contemporary, American Dance Festival, and Bates Dance Festival.
