Michael Fayer is the David Mulvane Ehrsam and Edward Curtis Franklin Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University. He earned his Ph.D. (1974) and B.S. (1969) in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. His research group investigates molecular systems using ultrafast multidimensional infrared and nonlinear UV/Vis methods, focusing on mesoscopic structure's impact on properties of materials like ionic liquids, fuel cell membranes, and biological membranes.
- Research Interests: Ultrafast molecular dynamics, intermolecular interactions, nanoscopic confinement effects, and quantum theory applications in materials.
- Education: Ph.D. and B.S. in Chemistry from UC Berkeley.
Fayer’s work spans physical chemistry, chemical physics, and materials science. He pioneered ultrafast 2D IR vibrational echo spectroscopy, enabling real-time observation of molecular structural evolution. His studies include water dynamics in confined environments, proton transfer in fuel cell membranes, and excitation transport in polymers.
