Graham R. Fleming is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of California Berkeley, holding a concurrent position at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. His research focuses on ultrafast spectroscopy and quantum coherence in photosynthetic systems, aiming to develop artificial photosynthesis for sustainable energy. He has led major initiatives including the Energy Biosciences Institute and the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing.
- Bachelor's of Science, University of Bristol (1971)
- Ph.D., University of London (1974)
- Postdoctoral Fellowships: California Institute of Technology (1974-75), University of Melbourne (1975-76)
His work spans chemical and biological dynamics in condensed phases, nanoscale quantum confinement effects, and conical intersection dynamics. He has authored over 444 publications and pioneered advanced multidimensional spectroscopic methods.
- Fellowships and Awards: Royal Society Fellow, NAS Member, Ahmed Zewail Award, Porter Medal, and multiple ACS/APS honors
Fleming's administrative roles include Vice Chancellor for Research at UC Berkeley (2009-present) and founding director of the Physical Biosciences Division at Berkeley Lab. His lab (B77 Hildebrand Hall) collaborates with Professor K.K. Niyogi on molecular genetics and ultrafast spectroscopy.
