Michael Fagans is an Associate Professor of Multimedia Journalism and Faculty Instructor at the University of Mississippi's School of Journalism and New Media. He holds a B.F.A. in Photojournalism from Rochester Institute of Technology (1998) and an M.A. in Political Science from the University at Albany, SUNY (1995). Prior to his current role, he taught at California State University, Bakersfield, and Bakersfield College.
His research focuses on documenting the American South through photojournalism, video, and audio projects, with an emphasis on race, class, and historical influences. Notable works include the documentary film ‘The Trafficked Life’, which addressed human trafficking in California, raising over $50,000 for anti-slavery nonprofits. His documentary work in Afghanistan, “Unguarded Moments,” was exhibited in a gallery show.
Awarded the National Press Photographers Association’s Photographer of the Year (2005) and a Poynter Institute fellowship (1999), Fagans teaches courses in applied video storytelling and journalism innovation. His expertise spans drone technology, location sound recording, and multimedia storytelling.
