Michael Everton is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Simon Fraser University and serves as the Print Culture Program Coordinator. His research focuses on 19th-century American literature, book history, and publishing ethics, with a particular emphasis on copyright norms and transatlantic publishing practices. He has held prestigious fellowships at institutions like the Huntington Library and the American Antiquarian Society. His work includes the book The Grand Chorus of Complaint (2011) and an edition of Billy Budd, Sailor by Herman Melville (2016). He is co-editing a new book on the 'courtesy of the trade' publishing norms and is a general editor of the Broadview Anthology of American Literature.
Everton holds a BA from James Madison University, an MA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a PhD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His recent teaching includes courses on book history, Moby-Dick, poetry and intermediality, and theories of reading. His research trends span postsecularism in early U.S. literature, religious themes, and the intersection of media and literary form. His articles explore topics like authorship ethics, historical publishing networks, and the socio-cultural dimensions of literary production.
