Claire Waters is a Professor of English at the University of California, Davis, where she has taught since 2001. She has also held academic positions at the University of New Mexico and the University of Virginia. Currently on sabbatical for 2024–2025, her research focuses on medieval religious literature and culture, including saints' lives, preaching, doctrinal handbooks, and miracles of the Virgin Mary, with a particular emphasis on the relationship between teachers and learners in medieval contexts.

Her work often bridges disciplines such as Medieval Literature, Religious Studies, Gender Studies, and Translation Studies. She has published influential monographs like Angels and Earthly Creatures and Translating Clergie, which analyze gender roles, vernacular transmission of religious knowledge, and pedagogical dynamics in medieval texts.
In addition to her monographs, she co-edited the Mystics, Goddesses, Lovers, and Teachers volume (2023) and produced a critical edition of the Lais of Marie de France (2018). Her editorial contributions include serving as General Editor for the Broadview Anthology of British Literature and membership on the Advisory Board for the Brepols series Medieval Women: Texts and Contexts.
