Dr. Michael Ellis Hoffer is a Professor of Otolaryngology and Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami with over twenty years of military experience studying mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI). As a clinician-scientist, he maintains an active Otology/Neurotology clinical practice while leading research on inner ear and brain trauma. He is deeply involved in the University of Miami's cochlear implant and hearing restoration services through the Ear Institute.
Dr. Hoffer's educational background includes:
- BS from Stanford University (1984)
- MD from University of California Irvine School of Medicine (1988)
- Otolaryngology Residency at University of Pennsylvania
- Neurotology Fellowship at Ear Research Foundation
His research focuses on diagnosing and treating traumatic head injury, dizziness, and hearing loss, with particular expertise in neurosensory consequences of mTBI. His lab pioneers pharmaceutical countermeasures for mTBI and novel techniques for managing hearing/balance disorders, especially in adult/pediatric cochlear implants and single-sided deafness. Clinical work emphasizes optimized diagnosis and management of post-mTBI neurosensory disorders.
Recent publications reveal expanding research frontiers: vestibular testing methodologies, inner ear temperature therapeutics, gut microbiome-Meniere's disease connections, and AI applications for patient education. These reflect his dual commitment to clinical innovation in otology/neurotology and translational research bridging brain injury with sensory disorders.
Dr. Hoffer serves as primary investigator for multiple clinical trials and mentors doctoral/post-doctoral students in research techniques and pathophysiology of hearing/balance diseases. His supervisory approach emphasizes scientific principles underlying disease mechanisms.
Leading a multidisciplinary research team, he investigates traumatic damage to the inner ear and brain through basic science and clinical studies. Collaborators span otology, neurotology, and neuroscience fields, driving development of diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions for mTBI-related sensory disorders.
