Michael DeJonge is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of South Florida, holding the James F. Strange Endowed Chair. He specializes in the history of Christian thought, religious studies methodologies, and religion in modern society. His research focuses on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Lutheran theology, and political theology, with notable works like Bonhoeffer on Resistance and Bonhoeffer’s Reception of Luther.
DeJonge earned his Ph.D. in Religion from Emory University (2009) and held prestigious fellowships including Fulbright Scholar (2008–09), Berlin Program Fellow, and Volkswagen/Mellon Fellow. He has been a Visiting Dietrich Bonhoeffer Professor at Union Theological Seminary and contributed to major edited volumes such as Translating Religion and Luther, Bonhoeffer, and Public Ethics.
His scholarly awards include recognition as a Fulbright Scholar and Berlin Program Fellow. His work bridges historical theology with contemporary ethical and political issues, emphasizing Bonhoeffer’s legacy and Lutheran traditions. He has served as Department Chair since 2017 and contributed to academic leadership through roles like Director of Graduate Studies (2011–14).
