Dr. Michael Chataway is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Justice at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), within the Faculty of Creative Industries, Education & Social Justice. He holds a PhD and a Bachelor of Criminology & Criminal Justice from Griffith University. His research focuses on fear of crime, occupational violence in healthcare, and innovative methodologies like mobile app and virtual reality technologies. Chataway has published extensively in criminology journals and authored Space, Time, and Crime, exploring spatio-temporal crime features. He is an honorary Adjunct Research Fellow at Griffith Criminology Institute.
Key research areas include fear of crime measurement, workplace violence against healthcare professionals, and the application of mobile technology for real-time data collection. He collaborates with institutions like the University of Manchester and University of Sunshine Coast on virtual reality studies. Teaching expertise spans research methods, environmental criminology, and forensic psychology.
Awards include the 2018 Academic Excellence in Research Award and his 2018 honorary appointment. Current PhD supervision includes projects on bystander intervention in hate crimes and systems approaches to workplace violence. Chataway’s work bridges criminology, psychology, and technology to enhance community safety and understand crime-related perceptions.
