Michael Chan

Michael Chan is an Associate Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, affiliated with the School of Design. He serves as Programme Leader of BA Social Design and leads the Wu Zhi Qiao (Bridge to China) Charitable Foundation's village improvement projects in China and Japan. His work bridges academic research with community development, focusing on sustainable design and cross-cultural collaboration.

His research interests include sustainable and ecological design, innovative structural methods for bridges, and preservation of local cultures in remote areas. Projects under his leadership, such as the Wu Zhi Qiao initiatives, emphasize community enrichment and government-supported rural development.

Michael has received notable awards: Excellent Teaching Award (2020), Construction Industry Volunteer Award (2018), and The Hong Kong Volunteer Award (2018). He oversees grants like the HKSAR Government Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme (2.99 Million) and collaborates with institutions like the Hong Kong Police Force.

He actively engages university students in hands-on projects with the Asian Lifestyle Lab and PolyU's Faculty of Construction and Environment (Civil Engineering, Building Construction, and Land Survey disciplines). His career spans 18 years of impactful fieldwork in China and Japan.
