Angela Ki Che Leung is an Emeritus Professor at The University of Hong Kong and Academician of Academia Sinica, Taipei. She holds a PhD in History from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris. Her research focuses on medical culture in South China, particularly the Canton-Hong Kong region, and the history of science, medicine, and technology in pre-modern and modern East Asia. She served as the first full-time Director of the Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IHSS) since 2011.
Leung’s academic journey includes roles as Chair Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2008) and research fellow at Academia Sinica. Her work bridges history and social sciences, examining themes like charitable organizations in the Ming-Qing period, leprosy history, and public health policies. She has authored/co-edited over 20 books, including *Leprosy in China: A History* (2009) and *Gender, Health, and History in Modern East Asia* (2017).
Her research projects include studies on medical culture in 19th-century Canton, nutritional knowledge in modern China, and everyday technologies in East Asia. She has supervised numerous graduate students and holds grants from the Research Grants Council (RGC). Key awards include her 2010 election as Academia Sinica Academician.
Leung contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives, including collaborative projects on infrastructure and modernity. She teaches courses on East Asian medicine, science, and technology at HKU.
