His responsibilities include directing major performance ensembles and teaching instrumental music courses. Previously, he served as Director of Music Ministries at Trinity United Methodist Church (2021–2024), overseeing five vocal choirs, two handbell choirs, and the annual Boar's Head Festival.

His research bridges music performance and scientific analysis, focusing on how conducting gestures influence ensemble acoustics. This is exemplified in his dissertation, which quantitatively measures dynamic output in response to conducting techniques. His broader interests include orchestral/wind ensemble pedagogy, choral direction, and interdisciplinary music-engineering applications.
Dr. Carney maintains active regional collaborations as a guest conductor, having worked with ensembles at the University of Hartford, South Hadley Chorale, Pioneer Valley Chorus, and Children’s Chorus of Springfield. He also previously contributed to the American Guild of Organists as a board member.
