Michael C. Fitzgerald is Professor and Chair of Chemistry at Duke University, with joint appointments in Biochemistry and Radiology. His research group develops mass spectrometry-based methods to study protein folding thermodynamics and ligand interactions.
Research integrates covalent labeling strategies like methionine oxidation with proteomic-scale analysis to investigate folding stability changes in disease models including Alzheimer's. Current projects focus on malaria parasite biochemistry and metal-induced protein aggregation mechanisms.
Honored with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, his NIH- and NSF-funded work advances fundamental understanding of protein behavior while developing diagnostic and drug discovery applications.
