Michael Brown is an Associate Professor at the School of Physics and Astronomy, Monash University. He is an observational astronomer specializing in the evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxy growth over cosmic time, utilizing major surveys like the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS), and the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. His work focuses on understanding how galaxies populate dark matter halos and the relationship between stellar mass and dark matter mass.
- Research Focus: Galaxy evolution, AGN dynamics, large-scale cosmic structure
- Key Collaborations: European 4MOST Consortium, Siding Spring Observatory
His research has led to significant findings that the most massive galaxies grow slowly, with minimal evolution in the stellar-to-dark matter mass relationship. Current projects involve PhD students and postdoctoral fellows studying star formation dependencies on environment and dark matter halo properties.
Recent publications highlight his involvement in the GOALS-JWST program and H I gas origin studies. Awardee of the Vice-Chancellor's Diversity and Inclusion Award (2020), Brown actively mentors PhD students and participates in professional associations like the Astronomical Society of Australia.
