Dr. Michael Brisbois is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at MacEwan University, where he has taught since 2010. He holds a PhD from the University of Calgary, an MA from the University of Northern British Columbia, and a BA from the same institution. His teaching focuses on literary analysis and practical learning methodologies, emphasizing transparency and dynamism in both in-person and online environments. Dr. Brisbois specializes in using new media and video content to engage students in online instruction.
His research explores utopian/dystopian impulses in 20th-century British literature, with a particular focus on authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, W.B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, and W.H. Auden. He examines how literature expresses millenarianism and societal visions of the future. Recent work includes studies of Anglo-Welsh border writers' use of history and folk horror, as well as analyses of 'Hard SF' in science fiction. Dr. Brisbois is available to supervise senior students' independent study projects.
