Michael Braby is an Honorary Adjunct Associate Professor in the Division of Ecology and Evolution at the Australian National University (ANU). He holds a PhD and BSc (Hons) in biological sciences. His research focuses on biosystematics, conservation biology, and the evolutionary history of Australian Lepidoptera, particularly butterflies and sun moths. Braby has led projects such as 'Butterflies Australia: A national database of butterfly distributions' and contributed to taxonomic revisions of Lycaenidae and Pieridae.
- Education: PhD, BSc (Hons)
- Key Roles: PI on 4 research projects (2002–2021), including taxonomic revisions and biodiversity databases.
His research interests include:
- Taxonomic inventory and biogeography of Australian butterflies
- Evaluation of historical processes shaping biodiversity
- Conservation strategies for threatened species
Notable awards include the Mackerras Medal (2012) for excellence in entomology, the Hayashi Award (2011), and the Whitley Medal (2001) for his book Butterflies of Australia.
Recent work involves molecular phylogenetics of Pieridae and Luciini tribes, linking diversification to climatic factors.
