Dr. Michael Bonshor is a University Teacher in Music Psychology and Course Director of the MA Music Psychology in Education, Performance and Wellbeing at the University of Sheffield. He holds roles at Leeds Conservatoire as Professor of Voice, Wellbeing, and Performance Psychology. With a background in professional singing and conducting, his research focuses on performance anxiety, music and wellbeing, and group dynamics in musical contexts.
He earned a BA Hons, MA, PhD, and PGCertTLHE. His work bridges academic research and practical applications, leading workshops on singing for non-singers, transgender vocalists, and respiratory health. He co-supervises two PhD projects funded by WRoCAH on singing for respiratory conditions and transgender singers' participation in choirs.
Research interests include choral confidence, conductor feedback, and brass band wellbeing. Key publications include The Confident Choir and studies on group singing facilitation skills. Awards include Fellowships from the Higher Education Academy and Independent Society of Musicians.
Professional activities include editorial roles for journals like Psychology of Music and consultancy for Making Music’s INCLUDE project. He actively promotes equity, diversity, and accessibility in music through teaching and community engagement.
