Michael Beil serves as Professor of Electronic Composition at the Cologne University of Music and Dance since 2007, directing the Studio for Electronic Music. Previously, he taught music theory and composition in Berlin (1996-2007) as head of New Music departments and co-founded the intermedial concert group Skart while leading the Klangwerkstatt festival.
Education:

His research centers on deconstructing concert conventions through live-compositional strategies that integrate instrumental performance with tape and video, actively involving musicians in creation. He critically challenges the "musical masterpiece" concept via contextualized musical quotations and instrument-specific idioms, positioning his work at the intersection of performance practice and contemporary aesthetics.
Scholarly publications analyze repetition in new music, critique overreliance on "musical material" terminology, and propose 21st-century aesthetics frameworks, revealing consistent interdisciplinary exploration across composition theory, video art, and philosophical inquiry.
