Michael Barsanti is a Professor of the Practice at Tufts University's School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA), where he has taught since 1981. He holds an MFA from the University of Minnesota (1980) and a BS from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh (1978). His work integrates ceramics, sculpture, and installation art with themes of environmental interaction, material transformation, and human impact on nature.
Key projects include the 'Bird Cohabitation' initiative (2015–present), using ceramic nests to support bird populations, and the 'Clay Landmarks' installation (2016) at the Arabia Steamboat Museum. His art often combines clay with steel, wood, and natural elements in site-specific works that critique ecological and social issues. Notable exhibitions span decades, including 'Art Encounters Preservation' (2012), 'Agricultural Encounters Sculpture' (2010), and early solo shows like 'Ceramic Constructions' (1984).
Barsanti’s studio practice in Sharon, Vermont, complements his teaching and technology consulting. He has created permanent installations at institutions such as the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion and has received awards including the Best in Show honor at the 2008 Ceramics Biennial.
