University of Missouri Saint Louisمعرفی
Michael B. Cosmopoulos is Professor of Archaeology and holder of the Hellenic Government–Karakas Family Foundation Chair in Greek Studies at the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL). A leading figure in Bronze-Age Aegean archaeology, he directs the long-running Iklaina Archaeological Project in the Peloponnese and serves as a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Athens.
Education & Academic Career
Cosmopoulos pursued classical and archaeological studies in Greece and North America, obtaining advanced degrees that prepared him for directing large interdisciplinary field projects and mentoring graduate cohorts at UMSL.
Research Interests
His research centers on the formation of the Mycenaean state, early Greek religion, and the political economy of the Bronze-Age Aegean. Through systematic excavation, geophysical survey, and archaeometric analyses at Iklaina, he investigates how secondary centers were integrated into palatial systems, the role of sanctuaries and hero cults in legitimizing authority, and the economic infrastructures that sustained emerging states.
Publication Profile
Over the past fifteen years Cosmopoulos has published extensively on state formation, administrative complexity, ritual practice, and urbanism at Iklaina. His articles illuminate the diachronic transformation of a modest settlement into a provincial center of the Pylos kingdom, revealing patterns of centralized storage, industrial production, and communal feasting that underwrote political authority.
Scientific Awards & Honors
- Order of Honour of the Hellenic Republic, conferred by the President of Greece (2022)
- Elected Corresponding Member, Academy of Athens (2017)
- Fellowships from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, and American Council of Learned Societies
Grants & Graduate Mentorship
Cosmopoulos has secured major funding from the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Geographic Society, and private Greek foundations, enabling comprehensive fieldwork and cutting-edge laboratory analyses. His project has trained numerous MA and PhD students, many of whom now hold academic and museum positions across North America and Europe.
Laboratories & Collaborative Networks
At UMSL he curates the Iklaina Project Research Laboratory, equipped for ceramic petrography, archaeometallurgy, and digital archiving. The project maintains partnerships with the Greek Ministry of Culture, the University of Athens, and international teams specializing in remote sensing, geoarchaeology, and bioarchaeology.
